Sculpture Daytrip to Lakeland

Two hours and twenty minutes south of Gainesville is the 2008-2009 Outdoor Sculpture Invitational in Lakeland. The dozen pieces by three artists (Carl Billingsly of Ayden NC; Hanna Jubran of Grimesland NC; and Charles Brouwer of Willis VA) are stretched down three blocks of Lemon Street in downtown Lakeland. As illustrated by the pictures available by clicking on the image below, there were also sculptures around the city as well as at the Polk Museum of Art which coordinated the Invitational.

The museum also runs the Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition which is on display in the Central Park of downtown Winter Haven.

The Lakeland show is scheduled to end this month but the Winter Haven remain in place until February 2010.

While in Lakeland, visit the campus of Southern University designed in the 1940s by Frank Lloyd Wright. See a few photos by clicking below on Wright's Water Dome.

Special Show at Library Headquarters

They Still Draw Pictures, an exhibit about children’s art in wartime from the Spanish Civil War to Kosovo will be on display at the Alachua County Library Headquarters from August 3 to September 4. The exhibit is available free of charge to all visitors during regular business hours.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) new tactics of warfare, including aerial bombardment, affected the civilian population as never before. As a result children were often displaced from their normal lives. It is estimated that as many as 200,000 child refugees fled the war zones. Many of those children were placed with foster families and children's colonies in eastern Spain.

They Still Draw Pictures includes a cross-section of the children's art produced in the colonies, as well as a selection of drawings from later wars, spanning from the Holocaust to Kosovo. Each collection bears a tragic and uncanny resemblance to their Spanish counterparts. Born of the trauma of exile and separation, the drawings are invaluable historical documents, giving physical form to the children's experiences of air raids, brutality, destruction, and homelessness. These pictures also represent daily life in the colonies and preserve the children's clear memories of life before the war and hope for life after it.

.

.

One such Colony was La Casa Ben Leider, named for an American aviator, journalist, and volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, who was shot down and killed while flying for the Spanish Republic. In 1938 the children in this Colony created a remarkable booklet of drawings (above) for Ben Leider's family to commemorate his sacrifice.

They Still Draw Pictures has been organized the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, housed in the Tamiment Library/NYU, is a living archive, devoted to preserving and spreading the legacy of the nearly 3,000 young Americans who volunteered to defend Spanish democracy in the late 1930s.
